New York City FC can possibly move atop the Eastern Conference and claim a fourth consecutive win, while the Vancouver Whitecaps FC will look to bounce back from consecutive losses when the teams meet at BC Place Saturday night.
The Whitecaps (6-14-9) grabbed an early lead, squandered a chance to double that advantage and fell to the Montreal Impact, 2-1, at Stade Saputo Wednesday night. Yordy Reyna tapped in a Tosaint Ricketts cross at the back post in the 17th minute and the chance to make it 2-0 was from the penalty spot a few minutes later. Evan Bush denied Reyna's chance and Ricketts knocked in the rebound, but the goal was called back following Video Review for encroachment. Bush also saved Reyna's re-take and the Impact leveled on a Doneil Henry own goal and took the lead two minutes later through Maxi Urruti.
NYCFC (13-5-8) avenged a loss at Red Bull Arena last month, beating the New York Red Bulls by the same 2-1 scoreline Saturday night at Yankee Stadium. Maxi Moralez canceled out Alex Muyl's opening strike with an equalizer from the penalty spot after being barged over by Michael Amir Murillo and Heber scored what proved to be the winner, an audacious backheel that megged Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles in the 53rd minute to secure NYCFC's third win in a row and fourth in the last five games.
