The Vancouver Whitecaps continued to boost depth in the center back stable with captain Jay DeMerit out, announcing on Thursday the signing of Supplemental Draft pick Adam Clement.
Selected 31st overall in the draft last month, Clement (above, right) played four seasons of college soccer at Duquesne University. During his time with the Dukes, the 6-foot-4, 195-pound defender registered four goals and six assists in 71 matches. The Erie, Pa., native received the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team honous for his efforts during his final two seasons with Duquesne, which included three goals and four assists in his senior year.
Clement, 22, spent the latter part of preseason with Whitecaps FC and made four starts, including matches against Arizona Sahuaros, College of Charleston, Houston Dynamo and Carolina RailHawks.
“Adam impressed us a lot with his quality during the preseason and we believe he has all the tools to become an important contributor within our club,” Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie said in a statement.
The signing is pending receipt of Clement's International Transfer Certificate. Per Major League Soccer and club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
