WATCH: Earthquakes host honorary captain for Kick Childhood Cancer

Kick Childhood Cancer San Jose Earthquakes Destinee Coronado

The San Jose Earthquakes supported MLS WORKS' Kick Childhood Cancer campaign by appointing Destinee Coronado as honorary captain of the Quakes. Team captain Chris Wondolowki handed the armband to Destinee.

Destinee got to experience a full matchday throughout the Quakes' thrilling game against Atlanta United on Wednesday, even giving the side a pep talk before kickoff.

"I know you're in for a big fight right now – we're fighting as well, but not like you are," interim head coach Steve Ralston told Destinee. "We're honored to have you be our honorary captain."

Here's how it all went down.

On April 14, Coronado was taken to the ER with pain in her abdominal area. After many tests and a CT scan, doctors found a Stage 3 malignant cancerous tumor growing in one of her ovaries. She underwent surgery to have the tumor removed the next day. Coronado is also currently undergoing chemotherapy for cancer cells found near her belly button.
