For much of US national team history prior to the 1990s, the past is a forgotten memory, much of the historical archive never preserved.
Until recently, that included the USMNT's first win over Mexico, which came in a World Cup qualifier in 1980 at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
But recent work has started to fill in the record, bringing attention to results of the past and key milestones not previously marked. Noah Davis' article for SB Nation on the US win over Mexico in 1980 helped get the ball rolling, and this week Univision released a documentary feature on the game, featuring players from both sides of the match (including then-US international Angelo DiBernardo) and even some previously unreleased game footage from the game.
It was a win decades in the making, and regardless of what side of the US-Mexico divide you're on, it's well worth a watch.
