Not only is Josef Martinez a perennial contender in the Golden Boot race presented by Audi, he’s also one of the most clinical finishers in MLS history.
The Atlanta United striker tops our look at the most efficient goalscorers in the league's quarter century, having found net 77times in 84 regular-season games. Those in consideration had to register at least 40 goals throughout their career, with their conversion rate expressed as goals/shots on goal.
Martinez led the way with a 55.80 percent conversion rate, while Toronto FC and US men’s national team forward Jozy Altidore (51.08 percent) and ex-Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins (50 percent) also reached the halfway point.
The only other active player is D.C. United forward Ola Kamara, while two MLS offseason departures – Nemanja Nikolic (Chicago Fire) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (LA Galaxy) – are also included.
Some all-time greats made the cut, too, including ex-Galaxy captain Robbie Keane, Real Salt Lake legend Alvaro Saborio and Stern John, whose two years with the Columbus Crew included 52 goals in 65 total games. Cyle Larin’s three stellar years with Orlando City SC, before his move to Turkish club Besiktas, also merited inclusion.
