They call him “Wondo,” but it may be time to change that moniker to “Mr. October,” as for the third consecutive season, San Jose Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski has won the award for October’s MLS Player of the Month.
The MVP favorite knocked home five goals in leading the Quakes to a 1-0-2 record, securing their first Supporters’ Shield since 2005 and his second Golden Boot in three years. The Quakes finished the regular season on a nine-game unbeaten run during which Wondolowski produced nine goals and two assists.

As usual, he saved his best for last. Wondolowski opened October with a hat trick in a 4-1 win at Colorado, then followed it up with the game-tying goal at home against LA in a 2-2 draw. He closed out the season and the month with a PK opener in a 1-1 draw at Portland, tying Roy Lassiter’s single-season mark of 27 goals in the process.
While he only pulled even on that league record, Wondolowski now stands alone as the only player in league history to take home four Player of the Month awards in the same season, and the only player this year to win more than one. He also won in April, June and September.
Wondolowski’s total of 34 goals and assists combined (27 goals, 7 assists) is also a league record.
