Chris Wondolowski’s renewed scoring form has been recognized by the North American Soccer Reporters as the Player of the Month award for September, the San Jose Earthquakes marksman’s third such nod of the 2012 season.
“Wondo” has led the Quakes to the best record in MLS, is running away with the Golden Boot and still has an outside shot at matching Roy Lassiter’s all-time MLS single-season goals record.
So it’s fitting that he has also lapped the field when it comes to PotM, with no one else in the league having won the honor more than once this year. His latest gong underlines his strong league MVP candidacy in what has been a career-best campaign for the veteran.

Wondolowski notched four goals and two assists over five matches last month, highlighted by a sensational performance against Portland on Sept. 19, where he came off the bench to inspire San Jose’s late comeback from a 2-0 deficit, netting two goals, the second of which arrived deep in injury time. That 2-2 draw prolonged the Quakes' year-long home unbeaten streak and kept them on course for the Supporters’ Shield.
Wondolowski edged out March winner and New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry in the voting among the North American Soccer Reporters this time around. Galaxy midfielder Juninho, Chicago’s Chris Rolfe and goalkeepers Jimmy Nielsen and Tally Hall (of Kansas City and Houston, respectively) also earned votes.
