Two-time Canadian Championship winners Montreal Impact enter this year's competition in the third qualifying round where they will meet York9 FC from the Canadian Premier League in the opening leg of an aggregate series Wednesday in Toronto.
The second leg is set for Stade Saputo July 24. The winner on aggregate meets either the Vancouver Whitecaps FC or Calgary-based Cavalry FC in the two-legged semifinals.
York9 FC
The first-year club reached the third qualifying round by beating FC Edmonton, 3-2, on aggregate in the second round. Goals by Luca Gasparotto and Rodrigo Gattas three minutes apart in the first half was followed by a 51st-minute goal by Simon Adjel before Oumar Diouck netted the late away goal for the visitors. The Eddies won the the return leg, 1-0, on a second-half stoppage time goal by Ngougack Temguia.
The Nine Stripes finished sixth in the CPL's spring season and opened the fall campaign with a 1-0 loss to the HFX Wanderers Saturday.
Montreal Impact
The Impact would love to avenge last year's semifinal loss to the Whitecaps, but first have to get past York9 in the first-ever meeting between the clubs in the Canadian Championship.
The Impact are coming off back-to-back league defeats, including a 3-2 home loss to Minnesota United FC Saturday. Anthony Jackson-Hamel's goal on 27 seconds was the fastest in MLS this season. Rudy Camacho followed in the 13th minute, four minutes after Mason Toye leveled for the Loons. But Ethan Finlay equalized again for the visitors from the penalty spot just before halftime and Toye struck for his second two minutes into the second half for the decisive goal.
