Nashville SC's Jacob Shaffelburg ascending for Canada at Copa AméricaÂ
It wasn't supposed to go this way for the three co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup: USA and Mexico out, and Canada – once the straggling little brother of three – in.
Jacob Shaffelburg enters his second MLS season with Nashville SC after joining from Toronto FC in 2022. Shaffelburg has made 55 appearances in his MLS Career. During his time at Toronto, he helped lead The Reds to a 2020 Voyagers Cup in the Canadian Championship. In 2021, he was awarded the Best Young Canadian Player award by the Canadian Soccer Association, which recognizes each tournament’s best Canadian U-21 player. At the international level, Shaffelburg made his Canada Soccer Men’s National Team on January 10, 2020, in a friendly against Barbados and has since earned a total of four caps. In his most recent international caps, Shaffelburg appeared in the third round of the 2021-2022 Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers where he helped Canada finish first and qualify for Qatar 2022™, ending a 36-year drought since the first and only time Canada played in a FIFA World Cup™ in 1986.
