PROFILE
A midfielder/defender from Richmond, BC, Patrick Metcalfe joined Whitecaps FC Residency in March 2016 after formerly playing with Fusion FC in the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League. He was signed to a Whitecaps FC 2 contract in April 2017, then to the club's Development Squad in February 2019.
In January 2020, Metcalfe was signed to an MLS Homegrown contract.
MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
'20: Metcalfe's first year in MLS saw him make seven appearances, including consecutive starts at Toronto and at Montreal in the Canadian leg of the league's continuation of play in August. He connected on 65 of his 70 passes, giving him a team-high 92.86% passing accuracy, while also pitching in defensively with 1.8 clearances per 90 minutes, good for second on the team among non-defenders.
USL/USL LEAGUE TWO
'18: Metcalfe played USL League Two with TSS Rovers, making 10 appearances. '17: Metcalfe made two starts in four appearances in his first professional season after joining the 'Caps former USL side Whitecaps FC 2 midway through the 2017 season.
DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY
'16-'17: Up until April, Metcalfe had scored two goals and started 21 of his 25 appearances for the Northwest Division leading U-18's. '15-'16: After joining the program in March, scored one goal and started seven of his 13 appearances as the U-18's won the Northwest Division and went on a 34-match unbeaten streak. He also started the DA championship final against FC Dallas.
UNIVERSITY
'17: Metcalfe also played for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in 2017, leading the school to the Canada West championship.
INTERNATIONAL
Metcalfe received his first call-up to the Canadian national team program in March 2021, helping the U-23 team to a semifinal finish at the Concacaf Olympic Qualifiers, including an assist to 'Caps teammate Derek Cornelius versus Honduras.
YOUTH/AMATEUR
Metcalfe played with Fusion FC from U-14 to U-18 in the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League and was voted MVP at the U-17 level and named captain at the U-18 level. From U-7 to U-14, Metcalfe played with Richmond FC, including winning a BC Soccer provincial championship at the U-13 level. At the provincial level, the Lower Mainland product was a member of the BC Soccer Provincial Team Program from U-13 to U-15. In November of 2013, he trained with youth teams at German clubs FC Nurnberg and SpVgg Unterhaching.
PERSONAL
At Fusion FC he was coached by former Whitecaps FC players Srdjan Djekanovic and Alex Elliott, with former ‘Caps player Jason Jordan leading the club as technical director. He credits Elliott as the most influential person in his soccer career so far for stressing the importance of the mental side of the game.
INTERESTING FACTS
In November 2013, he trained in Germany with the youth teams of FC Nurnberg and SPVGG Unterhaching.
