CF Montreal have loaned homegrown midfielder Tomas Giraldo to Canadian Premier League side FC Edmonton for the 2021 season without a right to recall the player, it was announced Friday.

Giraldo, 17, was signed by Montreal in June 2020 after developing in their academy. With a deep roster of homegrown talent, Montreal also recently loaned two others to CPL teams for 2021 with a right to recall: defender Karifa Yao to Cavalry FC and defender Keesean Ferdinand to Atletico Ottawa.

“As we did with the Karifa Yao and Keesean Ferdinand loans, we want to give Tomas an opportunity to play minutes this season and gain experience”, sporting director Olivier Renard said in a club release. “I reiterate that we have great confidence in our young Homegrown players and that a loan is a positive step in their development.”

Giraldo was born in Colombia, though represented Canada at the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Brazil. He joined Montreal’s U-13 team in 2015 from FSS Salaberry and awaits his MLS debut.

CF Montreal are entering their second season under head coach Thierry Henry. It’s been a busy offseason for the club, ranging from an overall rebrand to a slew of incoming and outgoing transactions.
