D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid won his first MLS Save of the Week presented by Phillips 66 Lubricants honor of the season, taking home the Week 23 award for a big stop in United’s 2-0 win against the Portland Timbers.
Hamid stuffed Portland forward Jack McInerney in the 26th minute of last Saturday’s match at RFK Stadium. Darlington Nagbe played McInerney behind the D.C. defense for a 1-v-1 opportunity, but Hamid raced off his line and got just enough of the ball to deflect it off the crossbar and out of danger.
Hamid edged out Seattle’s Stefan Frei in the final, beating the Sounders goalkeeper by less than one percentage point to take the honors. He topped Colorado’s Tim Howard and Houston’s Joe Willis in previous rounds.
