D.C. United starting goalkeeper Bill Hamid had surgery this past Monday to repair a sports hernia, the club announced.
The operation, which was performed at The Vincera Institute in Philadelphia, is expected to keep Hamid sidelined for approximately eight weeks as he reaches a full recovery. Hamid shared a photo on Instagram as he begins the road back to match fitness:
The 30-year-old goalkeeper heads into the 2021 season with 248appearances for D.C. United across the last 11 seasons. He originally signed as the Black-and-Red’s first Homegrown Player, then spent a brief spell at Danish club FC Midtjylland before returning to MLS, first on loan and then on a permanent basis. Hamid also has eight US men’s national team caps and was named the 2014 Allstate MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.
Should Hamid not be ready for the start of the 2021 MLS season, D.C. United have two experienced backup options in Chris Seitz and Jon Kempin. Seitz re-signed with the club this past December and has been in MLS since the 2007 campaign, while Kempin was acquired via trade from Columbus Crew SC and is entering his 12th MLS season after initially signing as a homegrown with Sporting Kansas City.
