Minnesota United FC forward Luis Amarilla underwent successful ankle surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2020 season, the club announced Saturday.
Amarilla, signed this past January on a 12-month loan with an option to buy from Velez Sarsfield, finished with two goals and one assist in seven games (five starts) this season. He hasn’t featured since a Sept. 2 game at the Houston Dynamo.
A timetable for Amarilla’s return wasn’t provided, though he did share a “thumbs up” on Instagram after the operation:
Without Amarilla, the Loons acquired Kei Kamara via trade Sept. 19 from the Colorado Rapids. They’ve also turned to Aaron Schoenfeld and traded young striker Mason Toye to the Montreal Impact, shuffling their options up top.
Upon coming to MLS, Amarilla made a bold proclamation of scoring 25 goals for Minnesota. That never panned out, of course, but he arrived stateside after scoring a league-leading 19 goals in 24 appearances for Universidad Católica of Ecuador’s Liga PRO.
