FC Cincinnati selected New York Red Bulls academy product Ben Mines with the top selection at the End-of-Year Waivers Draft on Wednesday. Mines was the only player selected.
The Red Bulls declined Mines' contract option. Cincinnati now hold his MLS rights and can begin contract negotiations. Should player and club reach a contract agreement, he will be added to Cincinnati’s roster as a Homegrown Player.
Mines, 20, signed a Homegrown contract with the Red Bulls in 2017 and has two goals and an assist in 262 MLS minutes, scattered across six appearances between 2018-20. He made one start in 2020.
Of the nine players available, just Mines was drafted. The rest of the league passed on their selections, including former US youth international starlet Andrew Carleton.
Carleton and the others not selected may be signed by any MLS team on a first come, first served basis.
