TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Transfer
The LA Galaxy have acquired Argentine left back Emiliano Insua from German side Stuttgart, the club announced Thursday. He was acquired on a free transfer.
Insua, who turns 31 next week, was a top youth prospect with Boca Juniors while Galaxy head coach Guillermo Barros Schelotto was still in his playing career. Insua never made his senior debut with Boca, transferring to Liverpool in 2007, where he'd stay until 2010.
“Emiliano is an experienced defender who has played for decorated clubs throughout the world,” said LA Galaxy general manager Dennis te Kloese in a statement. “We think he will boost our team on the defensive side and will add a veteran presence to our club. We are glad to add Emiliano to our team and are excited that he will represent the LA Galaxy.”
After leaving Liverpool, Insua has been well-traveled. He featured for the likes of Galatasaray, Sporting CP, Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano and, most recently, Stuttgart. Insua helped the German club win the 2.Bundesliga title and earn promotion back to the Bundesliga after they were relegated in 2016. He made five appearances with the Argentine national team.
Left back has been a revolving door for the Galaxy in recent times, with the likes of Jörgen Skjelvik, Dave Romney and Diedie Traore taking turns at the position in 2019.
It's been a busy week for the Galaxy, having already signed midfielder Aleksandar Katai. The club have been busier by way of departures than additions this offseason as they build for 2020 without Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
