New York City FC announced Friday that midfielder Andrew Jacobson has been traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for Targeted Allocation Money.
The trade was precipitated by Jacobson’s desire to move closer to his family.
“I want to sincerely thank New York City FC for helping me make a move to be closer to my family,” he said in a statement. “I also want to thank the New York City fans for making this past year such a memorable one. Playing for an expansion franchise in New York City was an amazing experience.”
Jacobson, a native of Palo Alto, California, joined New York City before their 2015 inaugural season and appeared in 33 matches for the club since then, leading the club in minutes. Prior to that, he spent three years at FC Dallas.
He has six goals and nine assists in 174 combined MLS appearances for NYCFC, FCD, the Philadelphia Union and D.C. United. He also played four matches for the US in the 2008 Futsal World Cup.
“Andrew is a quality midfielder with valuable MLS experience,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson. “He’s shown in the past that he can step into a new situation and be relied on to contribute. Andrew will also be an important asset in the locker room, as he will help guide our young midfielders.”
The Whitecaps head to Kansas City on Saturday to face Sporting KC (8:30 pm ET; MLS LIVE, TSN2 in Canada), while NYCFC welcome Toronto FC to Yankee Stadium on Sunday (5 pm ET; ESPN2, MLS LIVE, SN1 in Canada).
