The Portland Timbers suffered another blow not long after their wild 3-2 loss Toronto FC, with the news that team captain Will Johnson suffered a broken leg, the team confirmed to MLSsoccer.com, likely putting him out for the season.
The injury was suffered in a challenge with TFC's Mark Bloom just 11 seconds into the game. Johnson was carted off the field after an air cast was applied, and immediately transported to a local hospital. He was replaced by Ben Zemanski, who will also likely replace him in the lineup going forward.
The 27-year-old Canadian international has been a central part of the Timbers ever since joining from Real Salt Lake after the 2012 season. He scored nine goals and racked up five assists as Portland finished in first place in the Western Conference in 2013, and had six goals and two assists over 28 games (all starts) heading into Saturday's game.
