Efra Alvarez made his long-awaited LA Galaxy debut, after becoming a human highlight reel in the USL at 15-years-old last season, and he did not disappoint.
After helping orchestrate a Galaxy 2-1 comeback victory over the Chicago Fire, the Alvarez hype train is full steam ahead. It's not just his club future that interests most, as he'll soon have a decision to make on the international level, one that Mexico are reportedly pushing hard for.
Alvarez is eligible to represent both the United States and Mexico internationally, and according to ESPN's Herculez Gomez, the Mexican federation are putting on a "full-court press" to win the race and expect that he will be available for selection for the Gold Cup this summer. If he features for Mexico at the Gold Cup, his international future will be sealed and he'll be unable to switch to America.
Gomez adds that he thinks the decision could still go either way.
Alvarez has represented both the U.S. and Mexico at youth levels. He started with the US youth national team, but then switched to Mexico. He insisted last season that he hasn't "closed the door" on returning to U.S. Soccer, and hadn't yet made a decision, but was focused on Mexico for the moment.
