Star striker David Villa is dealing with a hamstring injury ahead of New York City FC's home match vs. the Portland Timbers on Sunday (5 pm ET, FOX Sports 1, FOX Deportes), according to a report by the New York Post's Brian Lewis on Saturday.
The Spanish Designated Player exited Thursday's 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union at halftime, and his participation in NYCFC's final pregame training session on Saturday was curtailed.
Lewis also noted that defender Jason Hernandez, nursing a calf issue, did not work out with the likely starters at training and might have to give way to Kwame Watson-Siriboe at the heart of the NYCFC back line on Sunday.
New York City are still smarting from the late equalizer that allowed the Union to snatch a share of the points at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. Head coach Jason Kreis, himself on the mend from a bout with illness, refused to definitively rule either Villa or Hernandez out for Sunday, however.
It appears that Javier Calle will be available for selection, as the Spaniard looks to have recovered from the cramping that forced him out of Thursday's match, where he made his first appearance as a left back for NYCFC.
