San Jose Earthquakes manager Matias Almeyda isn't looking forward to coaching against Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez in the California Clasico.
Even so, the Argentine manager told ESPN Deportes recently he believes Mexican media and fans who critical of Chicharito's move to MLS and the LA Galaxy should reconsider their position, likening them to his compatriots who criticize Lionel Messi for his performances with Argentina's national team.
"I say, ‘Why are we not happy that we have them in our countries?’" Almeyda told ESPN Deportes. "Let’s give thanks that they’re in our countries, that they were born and represent our country and have flown our flag highest.”
Almeyda also revealed he tried to tempt Chicharito into a return to Chivas de Guadalajara during his tenure at the Liga MX power that preceded his move to the Earthquakes. At the time, the El Tri striker wished to remain in Europe.
Now Almeyda faces the prospect of game-planning for Chicharito and a team coached by his very familiar foe, fellow Argentine Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
“A great reinforcement is arriving, unfortunately with the Galaxy and not with us, but I’m happy because I know that from what I’ve heard of Chicharito, he has happy, he is content," Almeyda said. "I have a great relationship with his coach and know that he’s going to do well. Chicharito ... he still has a lot to give, I hope that he gives it in all games except against us.”
