Save of the Week

Seattle's Stefan Frei wins MLS Save of the Week for Week 7

Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei has won MLS Save of the Week for Week 6 of the 2017 season, running away with the vote for his excellent stop on Marco Ureña in Seattle’s 1-1 draw last weekend at San Jose.

Frei made a wonderful diving stop to rob Ureña of what would have been a truly fantastic goal in the 42nd minute of last Saturday’s match at Avaya Stadium. Quakes left back Shaun Francis got the move started, curling in a cross to Chris Wondolowski at the penalty spot. Wondolowski took the ball out of the air with his first touch, cushioning a pass back to Ureña, who scissor-kicked a 15-yard shot toward the far post from the left side of the area. The volley looked ticketed for the back of the net, but Frei had other ideas, extending fully to his left and pawing the ball out for a corner with one hand.

The stop won Save of the Week by a comfortable margin, with Frei taking home 46 percent of the vote to handily beat runner-up FC Dallas ‘keeper Jesse Gonzalez, who received 18 percent of the tally. Crew SC GK Zack Steffen finished third with 17 percent of the vote, while RBNY netminder Luis Robles (11 percent) and D.C. United 'keeper Bill Hamid (8 percent) rounded out the field.

Frei and Seattle will be in action on Friday night, when they’ll open the 2017 Cascadia Cup against the Vancouver Whitecaps at BC Place (10 pm ET | TSN; MLS LIVE in the US).
