The Vancouver Whitecaps are in advanced negotiations to acquire Sporting CP right back Bruno Gaspar, sources confirm to MLSsoccer.com. The deal would be a loan with an option to buy. One source adds that a deal is expected to get done within a few days.
SIC Noticias first reported the club's interest this week. They report the purchase option would be around $1.75 million.
Gaspar, 27, joined Sporting ahead of the 2018-19 season and has made 30 appearances for the club. He spent 2019-20 on loan with Olympiakos in Greece.
The defender came through the famed Benfica academy before moving to Vitoria Guimarães. He was a regular with Portuguese youth national teams but recently switched affiliations to Angola, where he's made a handful of appearances.
Longtime Whitecap Jake Nerwinski has been the club's starting right back for a few seasons, while first-round 2021 SuperDraft selection Javain Brown is also a right back.
