MLS YOUTH CHARGE CONTINUES TO REWRITE THE RECORD BOOKS
The Major League Soccer youth movement continues to set records in the league’s 25th season, yet again raising the bar for the youngest achievements on the field in its history.
On Saturday evening at Earthquakes Stadium, San Jose Earthquakes Homegrown Player Cade Cowell came on the field as a halftime substitute in the club’s match vs. Minnesota United FC. At age 16 years, 145 days, Cowell became the fifth-youngest player to play in an MLS match, the youngest in the Quakes’ club history.
Cowell continues a trend that has seen age records lowered over the past few seasons. Six of the seven youngest players to play in a game in Major League Soccer history have all made their debuts over the last five seasons.
YOUNGEST TO PLAY A GAME IN MLS HISTORY (years.days)

Also on Saturday evening, Ricardo Pepi of FC Dallas scored the dramatic equalizer in his club’s 2-2 draw with the Montréal Impact at Toyota Stadium. At age 17 years, 58 days, Pepi is the second-youngest player to score a goal in FC Dallas club history, the 12th-youngest in MLS history to score a goal.
In MLS history, 15 players have now scored goals by the time they are 17-1/2 years of age. Two teams – FC Dallas and D.C. United – have placed three players in that range of the youngest goalscorers in MLS history. Four teams in all have had multiple goalscorers before turning 17-1/2 years of age.

CARLOS VELA BECOMES ONE OF FASTEST EVER TO 50-GOAL PLATEAU
Carlos Vela of Los Angeles Football Club added yet another chapter to his book of record-setting achievements in Major League Soccer, scoring the 50th goal of his Major League Soccer career on Sunday evening with a magisterial free kick vs. the Philadelphia Union at Banc of California Stadium.
It has taken Vela just 61 appearances in MLS league play to reach the 50-goal mark, the third-fastest in MLS history according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The top two marks were set over the last two years, with Josef Martínez scoring his 50th goal in his 54th game in 2018, then Zlatan Ibrahimovic duplicating the feat last year.
Before Martínez, the record stood for two decades, as Raul Diaz Arce became the first player to reach 50 goals in league history, hitting the mark on July 4, 1998 in his 67th game with D.C. United, a standard which stood until Martínez blew past it.

DIEGO VALERI ADDS YET ANOTHER CLUB TO HIS LIST OF MARKS
Diego Valeri of the Portland Timbers moved ever closer to another all-time league record this past weekend, after netting the only goal of the game for his club in a win vs. expansion side Nashville SC.
The goal was against the 22nd different opponent in Valeri’s MLS career – now the fourth-most total of individual clubs scored against in MLS history. The league’s all-time leading goalscorer, Chris Wondolowski of the San Jose Earthquakes, has scored against 24 different teams in his MLS career.
Wondolowski has yet to face this year’s expansion teams (Nashville and Inter Miami CF), and did not score in the Quakes’ only meeting thus far with 2019 expansion side FC Cincinnati. Of the next two players on the list, Kei Kamara and Josef Martínez, Kamara is still currently within reach of the top spot, having also not scored against any of the last three expansion teams, along with Atlanta United. Josef Martínez has scored a goal against every team he has played against, having not yet faced this year’s expansion sides, nor his own team in Atlanta United (also not playing any of the clubs disbanded before he came into the league, Miami Fusion, Tampa Bay Mutiny and Chivas USA).

BORNSTEIN RETURNS TO MLS SCORING CHARTS AFTER NEAR-RECORD SPAN
When Jonathan Bornstein scored the equalizing goal for Chicago Fire FC in their 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Saturday afternoon, it was his first goal in his return to Major League Soccer.
For Bornstein, it was his first goal in MLS competition since Oct. 19, 2008, when he was in his third season with Chivas USA. At 11 years, 140 days since his last MLS goal, the stretch is the second-longest between goals in league history according to the Elias Sports Bureau – a span surpassed only by DaMarcus Beasley, who went 11 years, 294 days between goals before his first goal on his return to the league. Beasley’s goal in 2015 for the Houston Dynamo was his first in MLS play since 2003 … when he played for the Chicago Fire.

• FC Dallas remained undefeated on the new season, getting some late heroics from 17-year-old Ricardo Pepi to snatch a 2-2 draw with the Montréal Impact at Toyota Stadium. Pepi’s stoppage-time equalizer made him the second-youngest player to score a goal in FCD club history (at 17 years, 58 days), the 12th-youngest in MLS history.
  
• The teams met once a season ago, reaching a 1-1 draw at Toyota Stadium on Sept. 29.
  
• NYCFC won the last meeting between the teams at Yankee Stadium, a 3-1 win April 29, 2018, their only win in five meetings in the all-time series. FCD has won once – that in the first meeting between the clubs, Sept. 12, 2015, a 2-1 win in Frisco.

was credited with eight saves between the posts, his most in an MLS league game since March 31, 2018, when he had nine at San Jose. His single-game career-high is 10, July 28, 2012, for the Chicago Fire vs. San Jose.

Zdenek Ondrasek
scored for a second consecutive week, a third game in a row with a goal (dating back to the end of last season). Ondrasek also added an assist – all three of his assists in his MLS career have also come when he has scored a goal. …

David Bingham
saved a penalty kick, the second season in a row he’s saved a spot kick vs. Vancouver (also doing it last April 5). Bingham saved two penalty kicks last season, his last coming May 24 vs. Orlando City. For his career, Bingham has seen seven penalty kicks unsuccessful against him in 29 attempts.

• The teams met twice a year ago in FC Cincinnati’s inaugural season. D.C. United claimed a 4-1 win July 18 at Nippert Stadium; they reached a scoreless draw in the season finale on Decision Day, Oct. 6 at Audi Field.

• Sporting goalkeeper Tim Melia was credited with one save in recording the 46th shutout of his MLS career – the most in SKC club history, surpassing the total of 45 set by Jimmy Nielsen from 2010-13.

• The Rapids won their second game in two outings to open the season, coming back from a goal down to defeat Orlando City SC at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday evening. Younes Namli scored his first MLS goal to pull the Rapids level, then Drew Moor headed home his first MLS league goal since 2017 for the victory, the first time since 2012 Colorado has started a season with back-to-back wins.
  
• The teams met twice a season ago. Whitecaps FC hit for the game-winner three minutes from full time for a 3-2 win on May 3 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park; they then reached a 2-2 draw June 22 at BC Place.
  
• The Rapids last won at BC Place on July 1, 2018, a 1-0 victory, their first win over the previous six trips to Vancouver, the first since 2014. Whitecaps FC have come away with points on each of their last four trips to Commerce City, winning in each of the last three years.

• The Quakes suffered their first loss on the new season, falling 5-2 to Minnesota United FC at Earthquakes Stadium on Saturday evening. Magnus Eriksson and Vako Qazaishvili netted the Quakes goals, each their first of the season.
  
• The teams met once a season ago, the Union coming away with a 2-1 win Sept. 25 in San Jose. The win ended a streak of three consecutive draws in the series.
  
• The Union have a six-game undefeated streak alive in the series, over the last five years, with three wins and three draws in that time. The last Quakes win came on Sept. 8, 2013, a 1-0 win at Buck Shaw Stadium. The last two matches at Subaru Park have ended in draws; the Quakes last won there in 2012.

• The teams met twice a season ago and Sounders FC won both, each by a 1-0 scoreline, on May 11 at CenturyLink Field and July 27 at BBVA Stadium. Sounders FC have a five-game winning streak alive in the series in league play, and seven wins in a row including the MLS Cup Playoffs.

• The Timbers rebounded from an opening day defeat for their first win in 2020, defeating Nashville SC by the game’s only goal at Providence Park on Sunday evening. Diego Valeri scored for a second consecutive week, now with both Timbers goals on the new season.
  
• The teams have played to four consecutive draws in the series, including a 2-2 result last Sept. 25 at Providence Park in the lone meeting between the teams.
  
• The Timbers have a seven-game undefeated streak alive in the all-time series, with six draws, undefeated in five meetings all-time in Portland. • Minnesota United FC claimed the victory in the lone meeting between the teams a year ago, a 2-1 win April 6 at Red Bull Arena, their first win in three meetings all-time.
