A former number one overall MLS Draft Pick, and MLS Rooke of the Year, United States National team member Maurice Edu is set for his third season in Philadelphia with the Union after returning from time in Europe. An elite MLS talent in either midfield or on the back line, the Union will look forward to his return from a leg injury that will cause him to miss the first half of the 2016 season.
OUTSIDE MLS: Edu left the league in 2008 to move to legendary Scottish Premier League side Glasgow Rangers. He won multiple titles there and forever endeared himself to fans with a 90th minute winner in a Glasgow Derby, against Celtic FC. He also played for Stoke City in the English Premier League, and spent time in Turkey on loan to Bursaspor. While with Rangers, Edu played in the UEFA Champions League, including scoring a goal against Spanish Giants Valencia.
NATIONAL TEAM: Edu has appeared in 46 games for the United States National Team. He was included in the 2008 Summer Olympics and played three games as center back. He also appeared at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and was on the provisional roster for the 2014 World Cup.
COLLEGE: Edu was a Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2006, as well as a first team NSCAA All-American. In 2005, he was All-ACC second team selection as a sophomore at Maryland and played a major role in the success of Maryland's NCAA College Cup National Championship.
