D.C. United were dealt a big blow on Thursday, when the team announced that starting goalkeeper Bill Hamid will miss 4-to-6 months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee.
Hamid, 25, suffered the injury while preparing for the US men’s national team’s annual January camp. The 2014 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Hamid made 25 appearances for United in 2014, helping the club to their second consecutive MLS Cup Playoff appearance.
Veteran backup Andrew Dykstra figures to start for United while Hamid is out. D.C. announced earlier this month that they had re-signed the 30-year-old ‘keeper, who made nine league appearances last season and started all four of the club’s CONCACAF Champions League group stage contests. D.C. also have 22-year-old goalkeeper Travis Worra on their roster.
United’s players will report to preseason camp on Friday in advance of the club’s CCL quarterfinal series against Mexican club Queretaro. D.C. will travel to Queretaro for the first leg of the series on February 23 before hosting the decisive second leg at RFK Stadium on March 1.
