Has Jozy Altidore played his final game for Toronto FC?
The club announced on Monday that the forward is ruled out of Toronto FC’s Decision Day presented by AT&T match against Atlanta Untied (4:30 pm ET | TV & Streaming info) and will undergo surgery to remove a bone fragment from his right ankle.
That will also likely rule him out of a possible call-up for the US men’s national team's European friendlies against England and Italy next month.
The 28-year-old Designated Player was limited to just 12 starts in 13 league appearances this season His last appearance was his lone off the bench, playing 32 minutes in a 2-1 loss to Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BMO Field on Oct. 6 that eliminated TFC from playoff contention.
Altidore, who had seven goals and one assist in league play this season, made 24 overall appearances and had 13 goals and three assists in all competitions. He missed nearly four months this season following surgery to remove bone spurs from his foot in early May.
Altidore is under contract for 2019, but rumors of his future in Toronto have been a constant refrain throughout the season. There was talk of possible interest in France and Italy in August.
“It's not in my hands,” Altidore said after the loss to the Whitecaps. “I've tried to show every night I stepped on the field since 2015 when I arrived, to give everything I could, all the time. [I] tried to play for the fans, for my family, for everybody that has followed this club. I've done what I can.”
“If my future isn't here, it's been nothing but a pleasure,” continued Altidore. “I thank the fans for all the support through the years and all the best in the future.”
