The Philadelphia Union will likely be without one of their most dangerous attacking players for the rest of the season, as the club announced on Wednesday that winger David Accam will be sidelined for "approximately eight weeks" after undergoing "a procedure to clean up a sports hernia repair from November 2017" on Tuesday.
Though the announcement notably did not describe the Ghanaian international as being out for the season, the timeline laid out would put him back on the field in the week before MLS Cup. The Union have already qualified for the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs and are aiming to finish in the Eastern Conference's top four in order to host a Knockout Round match.
It's been a season of adversity for Accam, one of Philly's showcase offseason acquisitions, who arrived in January via a trade with the Chicago Fire in exchange for a combined package of more than $1 million in allocation money. Hampered by injuries, he's scored just one goal in 1,213 minutes of league play (23 games, 13 starts) after racking up 33 goals and 15 assists over three seasons in Chicago.
