Mexican national team captain Andres Guardado will miss the Oct. 10 CONCACAF Cup clash with the US due to the ankle injury he suffered in PSV Eindhoven’s UEFA Champions League match Tuesday against Manchester United, according to a report from Dutch newspaper Eindhovens Dagblad.
Rik Elfrink reported Thursday that Guardado will be sidelined for six weeks, putting his return window at least a week after the playoff showdown at the Rose Bowl between El Tri and the USMNT for a berth to the 2017 Confederation Cup in Russia.
Eindhoven confirmed Wednesday that the 28-year-old midfielder, the Golden Ball winner from Mexico’s Gold Cup championship run this summer, suffered ligament damage in the collision with United’s Chris Smalling but didn’t provide a timeline for his return.
The same day as his injury, Guardado was named to Mexico’s 35-man provisional roster for the CONCACAF Cup. He has 21 goals in 119 career appearances with El Tri.
