San Jose Earthquakes defender Clarence Goodson will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a herniated disk in his back and miss the remainder of the season, he announced on Twitter on Wednesday.

Goodson only appeared in two matches this year before being sidelined with the injury. He wrote in his Twitter post that he attempted to rehab the injury without surgery, but that an operation is now necessary “not just for soccer but in order to function in everyday life.”

The 34-year-old former US international has been with San Jose since the middle of the 2013 season. He’s appeared in 47 regular season matches for the Quakes, scoring a pair of goals and tallying three assists from his center back position. Victor Bernardez and Marvell Wynne will likely continue as San Jose’s first choice center backs in his absence.
