New England Revolution midfielder Jermaine Jones underwent successful sports hernia surgery Tuesday afternoon at the Institute for Sports Science, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Santa Monica, Calif., the team announced.
According to a team release, Dr. Bill Hutchinson performed the surgery and Jones is scheduled to miss the next four to six weeks while completing his rehabilitation.
The announcement comes a day after Jones posted a video on Instagram announcing that he was going in for surgery.
He also offered a post-surgery message via Instagram.
The timetable for his return will keep him out of next week’s Desert Diamond Cup preseason tournament and could threaten his availability for the Revolution’s regular-season opener March 8 in Seattle.

Jones suited up for the US national team on Sunday in a 2-0 friendly victory against Panama, logging 90 minutes at center back, his third straight start there for the Yanks.
He is entering his first full season with the Revolution after signing with the club in August 2014. He had three goals and six assists in 15 regular season and postseason games with the Revs, helping the club win the Eastern Conference Championship for the first time since 2007. Jones was the runner-up for the MLS Newcomer of the Year award, helping the Revs compile an 11-2-2 record in games that he appeared in, including an 8-0-0 record when he had a goal or an assist.
