The injuries are piling up ahead of the World Cup next week, and young Germany starlet Marco Reus is the latest worry.
The Borussia Dortmund man sharply rolled his ankle just prior to halftime of Germany's tune-up match against Armenia, which they won 6-1. The 25-year-old attacking midfielder was visibly in pain following the incident and had to be helped off the field by medics.
Reus' status for the World Cup was unclear after the game, with Germany – who face the US in the final game of Group G play on June 26 – yet to provide specific information on the injury, though there has been major worry for a player thought to be a starter for Joachim Löw's team in Brazil.
Bild reported on Friday that Reus suffered a torn ankle ligament, and will miss the World Cup. The German federation has not confirmed that report yet, however.
Germany open play against Portugal on June 16 and will also face Ghana on June 21 prior to facing the United States.
The apparent injury comes on a rough day for some of the most well-known World Cup hopefuls – France star Franck Ribéry was ruled out of the tournament on Friday, as was Russia captain Roman Shirokov, both with back injuries.
Soon-to-be US opponent Cristiano Ronaldo is also struggling to stay healthy ahead of the World Cup, and will not feature in Portugal's friendly against Mexico on Friday night.
